Lupian,
Munoz Duo Set to Play at SoCal Regionals |
For the fourth consecutive season, the
SDCC men's tennis team will have representatives in the
Southern California Regional Tennis Championships. The
doubles tandem of Andre Lupian and David Munoz will
compete in the season ending individual playoff. This
will be the first appearance for both individuals in the
championship. The duo qualified for the championship by
making it into the quarterfinal round of the PCAC
tournament.
"I'm very aware and proud to have qualifiers for the
fourth consecutive season," said Head Coach Brandon
Lupian.
"I'm most proud of our consistency as a program even
though our team record doesn't show our true growth as a
team. Having them qualify shows our effort to build
better tennis players. The next step in the process is
to make sure they graduate and transfer."
Munoz played No.1 singles and No. 1 doubles the entire
season for the Knights and has been able to handle that
tough position. Munoz has been improving with every
match and is playing his best tennis at the end of the
season. "He has a very strong chance to transfer and
continue to play at a four-year school," said Coach
Lupian.
"A
couple of coaches have contacted me
already and like his game. David's biggest strength is
his competitiveness. He competes in practice and pushes
the other guys to get better, he pushes himself to get
better. He will be sorely missed next season."
After redshirting on last season's 15-10 team, Lupian's
tennis game continues to be a work in progress. "He is
blessed with all the physical tools, but needs to
improve his mind game, said Coach Lupian.
"Once
his mental game catches up to his physical ability, he
will be a dominant player."

Court Naming
Ceremony |
 |
|
On Saturday, April 10, a court
naming ceremony took place at City College's tennis courts to
honor Bob Bacon and Angel Lopez who made generous donations to
the Knights' men's tennis program.
The men's tennis team, along with
Head Coach Brandon Lupian and Athletic Director Kathy McGinnis,
participated in the ceremony.
Bacon (pictured above holding a
white hat) coached the Knights to nine consecutive conference
championships from 1969-77 and two straight championships from
1973-74. Lopez (pictured to the right of Bacon) played under
Bacon's championship teams from 1975-76 and then moved on to
play at the University of Arizona. Lopez then went on to have a
successful professional career.

Brandon
Lupian is in his third year as Head Coach of the men's tennis
program at SDCC. Lupian, a product of the
community college system, competed at Southwestern College where
he was a two-time All-PCC selection. Brandon then moved on to
play at U.S. International University while
earning his B.A. in Sociology in 2003.
Lupian was the Head Boy's and Girl's
Tennis Coach at Otay Ranch High School where the Boys won the
South Bay League in 2004, 2005 and 2006. His Girl's team won the
South Bay League championship in 2005.
Lupian
also served as the Men's Assistant Tennis Coach at Southwestern
College for the past three years. Brandon also volunteers some of his time to
help the Chula Vista High School basketball program.
Lupian has roots to City
College through his father, Lazaro (Larry) Lupian, who competed
in tennis here under Coach Bob Bacon during the "glory days" of
SDCC Athletics. His aunt and uncle both played professional
tennis.
Coach Lupian's philosophy: "Never
give up, play hard, and have FUN!" |
