Knights'
Most Successful Season in 17 Years Ends With Series Loss
to Cuesta
After winning the first game
of a best-of-three CCCAA Regional Playoff Series, the
Knights were defeated in games two and three on Saturday
by Cuesta, who now moves on to the Super Regionals.
In game two, the Knights
took a 10-5 lead in the eighth inning after Michael
Sandoval's grand slam over the left field fence. The
home run capped off a seven-run inning for the Knights
that seemed to put them in good position to get the
series win, but Cuesta did not let up.
The Cougars came back
with four runs of their own in the bottom of the eighth
and cut the deficit to 10-9. Then in the bottom of the
ninth inning with two out and one runner on, Austin
Cunningham hit a triple to center field that drove in
the tying run.
Then in the bottom of the
11th, Cuesta's Mitchell Prophet hit a single up the
middle that drove in Ty Muller from second base to win
the game, 11-10, and force a third game.
In game three, the
Cougars carried over the momentum from the come back win
and jumped on the Knights early as they went ahead 10-0
after three innings. SDCC could not recover and
eventually lost, 20-7.
It was the most
successful season that the Knights have had in 17 years
as they won the Pacific Coast Athletic Conference
championship. Head Coach Chris Brown was named PCAC
Coach of the Year and pitcher Hunter Herrera was
selected as the PCAC Player of the Year.
The Knights also had
seven players selected to the All-PCAC First Team
including Herrera, Adam Bileckyj, Corey Vasquez, Anthony
Long, Louis Casarez, Michael Sandoval and Gilbert
Guardado.

Walk-Off
Single by Louis Cazares Gives Knights Victory in Game 1
The No. 2 Knights (27-7) took
a step closer to advancing to the Super Regionals after
Louis Cazares' game-winning single in the bottom of the
ninth inning on Friday afternoon. SDCC defeated No. 16
Cuesta, 5-4, in the first game of a best-of-three CCCAA
Regional Playoff Series.
Knights' starting pitcher
and PCAC Player of the Year Hunter Herrera (9-2) took a
4-2 lead into the ninth inning, but could not keep it as
the Cougars scored two runs to even the game at 4-4.
With two runners on and
one out, Cuesta's Mitchell Prophet hit a line drive to
center field that Kevin Santos failed to catch. As a
result of the error, TJ Filicia was able to score from
second base. Later in the inning with two out, Davey
Shultz hit a double down the left field line that scored
the tying run and nearly drove in the go-ahead run. On
the play, Prophet was trying to score from first base,
but was thrown out at home on the relay by SDCC third
baseman Michael Sandoval.
In the bottom of the
ninth, Santos redeemed himself with a lead off single.
After a pop out by Anthony Long and a walk by Gilbert
Guardado, Corey Vasquez was able to move the runners
over with a ground out. Then Cazares came up and hit a
high, fading ball that landed safely near the right
field line to bring in Santos from third base for the
win.
Cuesta took a 1-0 lead in
the second inning after Ty Muller's solo home run to
left field. The Knights answered with two runs in the
bottom of the second after Santos' two-run triple. They
eventually took a 4-1 lead after four innings.
Hunter pitched his second
complete game of the season. He struck out six on Friday
while allowing two earned runs on eight hits.

with one RBI and one run. Santos went 2-for-4 with two
RBI and one run while Louis Cazares went 3-for-5 with
one RBI.

No. 2 Knights
Drop 9-5 Decision to Palomar
The Knights had a chance at
completing a season sweep of Palomar, but fell short on Thursday
afternoon as they were defeated, 9-5, at Morley Field.
Knights' starter Adam Bileckyj left
the game after five innings with the game tied at 5-5. All five
runs were unearned and came off four hits. He also struck out
five in the process.
Jake Lambert relieved Bileckyj in
the top of the sixth, but did not last long. Lambert allowed the
bases to get loaded after giving up a single and two walks with
one out. Right-hander Mike Scaramella was then brought in and
got the force out at second base, but the Comets' Ty Afenir
scored from third on the play to give Palomar what turned out to
be the winning run. Scaramella then struck out Zach Gage to end
the inning.
In the seventh inning, the
Knights had two runners on with no outs after Corey Vasquez was
hit by a pitch and Louis Cazares' single, but they were left
stranded. Michael Sandoval struck out, Chuck Matthey popped up
and Phil Creecy struck out to end the inning.
The Comets scored three unearned
runs in the ninth inning to go ahead, 9-5, and it proved to be
too much for the Knights to overcome on this day. Box Score

behind the Knights for first place in the PCAC.
Herrera struck out nine and held the
Comets to two runs on eight hits on Tuesday afternoon.
The Knights started out strong by

third bases. Later in the inning, Michael Sandoval hit a double
to right field that scored two more runs.
Palomar got back within one run
after scoring two in the third inning on a 2-RBI single to right
field by Victor Martinez. Herrera, however, would not allow
another run. He retired the next 10 batters and wasn't
threatened until the ninth inning when the Comets loaded the
bases with one out. Herrera got out of the jam by striking out
Ty Afenir and then getting the force out at second base on a
ball put in play by Jeremy Cline.
Long finished 1-for-4 with a solo
home run in the fifth inning. Gilbert Guardado went 3-for-5 with
a run and Michael Sandoval went 1-for-5 with two RBI.
The Knights look to complete a
season sweep of the Comets on Thursday at 2 p.m. at Morley
Field.
The Knights took an early 2-0 lead,
but Grossmont responded with four unanswered runs and went on to
defeat City, 4-2, on Tuesday afternoon at Morley Field.
Anthony Long and Corey Vasquez
started off the game with back-to-back singles and both
eventually scored to give the Knights a 2-0 lead after one
inning. Long scored on a single by Gilbert Guardado and Vasquez
came home on a wild pitch.
Grossmont's Jacob Hovis replaced
starting pitcher Greg LaBarre in the second inning and shut down

double play.
Starting pitcher Hunter Herrera
(6-1) struck out 11 batters and allowed one unearned run on four
hits in seven innings as the Knights (17-4, 10-3 PCAC) won their
second straight against San Diego Mesa, 7-2, on Tuesday
afternoon at Morley Field.
Herrera, who had a rough first inning during his last start, was
back in his usual form as he struck out the first four Mesa
batters. Mesa's only run while Herrera was on the mound came in
the third inning after a throwing error by Knights' catcher
Corey Vasquez. The error allowed Kyle Ginter to score from
second base and tie the game at 1-1.
City took the lead for good in
the fourth inning after a ball put in play by Vasquez in the
infield scored Kevin Santos from third.
The Knights took control after
scoring two runs in the sixth inning and three more in the
seventh to take a 7-1 lead.

Knights' Six-Game
Winning Streak Snapped by Southwestern
Southwestern pitcher Brandyn Bell
nearly tossed a complete game, going 8.2 innings on Thursday
afternoon, as the Jaguars defeated the Knights, 6-2.
Knights' starting pitcher Hunter
Herrera (5-1) had a rough first inning as he struggled with his
control. He hit four of the first seven batters leading to three
runs for Southwestern. Herrera, however, did recover by retiring
the next 10 batters.
City's offense did not do much to
help Herrera out as the Knights' bats struggled to get anything
going against Bell. In the first eight innings, the Knights
managed to get runners in scoring position only twice. Their
best chance came in the fourth inning when Phil Creecy and Louis
Cazares both got on with one out, but Bell ended the inning with
no further damage.
The Knights did get two runs in
the ninth inning, but it was too little too late. Bell and his
fellow Jaguars ended the Knights longest winning streak of the
season at six.

second, Nick Covyeau hit a sacrifice fly to bring in Michael
Sandoval and Chuck Matthey followed with a single to score

single to left field brought home Sandoval for the Knights'
third run. Later in the inning, Matthey came through again with
an RBI single to right field for the 4-0 lead.

in the sixth inning to cut the lead to 5-4. The Comets' Zach
Gage hit a double that scored two and then later scored on
a single by Jose Rodriguez.
The Knights, however, responded
with two runs of their own in the bottom of the sixth to extend

Palomar this season and will face them again on Saturday, March
20 at noon.
Right-handed pitcher Mike Scaramella
(1-2) struck out seven and allowed two runs on six hits in 5.1

City took control of the game in
the fourth inning when they put up five runs to go ahead, 7-1.
The inning was highlighted by an RBI triple by Matthey and an
RBI double by Kevin Santos.
Imperial Valley threatened in the
sixth as they loaded the bases, but Knights' reliever Jake
Lambert kept the damage to one run after striking out Rudy
Arellano and then getting the force play at second base to end
the inning.
Lambert struck out four and
allowed five hits in 2.2 innings of work. First baseman Phil
Creecy went 2-for-5 with one run and three RBI, including a
two-run home run over the center field fence in the sixth
inning.
Covyeau went 3-for-3 with one RBI
and two runs scored. Matthey and Santos each had two RBI.

Conference has named Hunter Herrera as its Men's Athlete of the
Week for the week ending on March 14.

Herrera Dominant
in 5-1 Win Over Grossmont
Sophomore right-hander Hunter
Herrera (4-0) allowed only one run on three hits and struck out
a season-high 12 batters as the Knights (10-3, 3-2 PCAC)
defeated Grossmont, 5-1.
Herrera did not allow a hit until the sixth inning when
Grossmont shortstop Jake Villalobos' ground ball caromed off
third base and did not allow Knights' third baseman Michael
Sandoval enough time to make a play. The Griffins threatened in
the inning with runners on second and third base, but Herrera
held them off and kept them scoreless.
The Knights were also held
without a run for the first five innings by Grossmont
right-hander Hunter Brown, but City finally broke the scoreless
tie in the sixth inning on an RBI double by sophomore left
fielder Chuck Matthey.
SDCC then broke the game open in
the seventh inning by scoring four runs to go ahead, 5-0.
Shortstop Louis Cazares started a two-out rally by reaching base
on an error. First baseman then homered to the deepest part of
the park in center field. It was his second home run in as many
games and his fourth overall. Later in the inning, Sandoval
scored on an error and catcher Corey Vasquez came home on a wild
pitch.
Left-hander Adam Bileckyj
relieved Herrera in the ninth inning and retired all three
batters he faced.
Sandoval went 2-for-4 with two
runs and Matthey went 3-for-3 with one RBI.
Knights Suffer
Tough 4-3 Loss in 10th Inning to Mesa
The Knights were one out away from
winning their third straight conference game, but a game-tying
two-run home run by San Diego Mesa's Jimmy Filter in the ninth
inning changed the outcome. Mesa came back to win, 4-3, in the
10th inning.
SDCC scored
the first two runs of the game. In the second inning, Julian
Velazco scored on a misplay by right fielder Kyle Ginter after
Mike Sandoval's single. In the third inning, Phil Creecy hit his
third home run of the season when he belted one over the left
field fence.
Mesa cut City's lead in half with
a run in the fifth inning, but the Knights got it back with a
run in the sixth. Sophomore Chuck Matthey hit an RBI double down
the the right field line to bring in Corey Vasquez for the 3-1
lead.
Freshman right-hander Nick Geraci
came into the game in the seventh innning and survived a threat
by Mesa. Geraci loaded the bases with two out, but stuck out
Lance McFeely to end the inning.
In the ninth inning, Geraci got
the first two batters out, but gave up a single to Myles Dempsey
to keep the inning alive. Then Filter came up and hit the
game-tying two-run home run to left field. Geraci avoided any
more damage by striking out the next batter.
After the Knights were unable to
score in the bottom of the ninth, Mesa took a 4-3 lead in the
10th on what turned out to be the game-winning RBI single by
Alejandro Galvan.
Long Scores
Winning Run In 9th As Knights Defeat Palomar, 5-4
Sophomore second baseman Anthony
Long ran from first base to home in the bottom of the ninth
inning of a tie game to score the run that gave the Knights a
5-4 victory over rival Palomar.
The Knights fell behind 1-0 in the
first inning, but came back with two runs in the second inning
to take the lead. Freshman third baseman Michael Sandoval scored
the Knights' first run on a wild pitch after getting on with a
double. Later in the inning, sophomores Corey Vasquez and Kevin
Santos hit consecutive singles, then sophomore Chuck Matthey
brought Vasquez home on a fielder's choice.
After Palomar tied it at 2-2 in
the fifth inning, the Knights scored one run in bottom of the
fifth and one in the sixth to take a 4-2 advantage. Freshman
right fielder Gilbert Guardado hit an RBI double in the fifth
and freshman first baseman Phil Creecy crushed a ball over the
fence in left field for the solo home run in the sixth inning.
Palomar, however, wasn't done
yet. The Comets' Alfonso Casillas tied the game at 4-4 with a
two-run home run to left field off the Knights' starting pitcher
Hunter Herrera in the seventh inning.
In the bottom of the ninth with
two out, Long hit a single through the left side. Then during
Guardado's at bat, Long stole second base and came around to
score the winning run as catcher B.K. Santy's throw to second
base bounced towards center field.
Herrera pitched seven innings and
allowed two earned runs on seven hits. He also struck out seven.
Lefty Adam Bileckyj relieved Herrera and stuck out the first two
batters he faced, but allowed the Comets to load the bases. Head
Coach Chris Brown then brought in freshman righty Nick Geraci
(1-0) who ended the Comets' threat with a strike out. Geraci
retired the side in the ninth inning and became the pitcher of
record.

The Knights scored two more runs
in the fifth inning on a pinch-hit double down the left field

they would hold on to.

Bileckyj (2-0)got the start and the win. He pitched 4.2 innings
and allowed one run on five hits. Jake Lambert relieved him in
the fifth inning and threw for 1.1 innings. He allowed two runs
(one earned) on two hits.
Nick Geraci closed the game out
for the Knights by pitching the final three innings and earned
the save, his second of the season. He faced 10 batters and
allowed one hit.

ball in foul territory.

Knights' Streak
Ended By Defending State Champs
The Knights' six-game winning streak
to start the 2010 season was brought to a halt by Orange Coast,
the defending CCCAA champions. The Tigers defeated the Knights,
3-0, at Morley Field on Friday.
Starting pitcher Mike Scaramella
(1-1) did his best to keep the Orange Coast batters quiet for
most of the game. He gave up two earned runs on seven hits in
seven innings of work. The only run he gave up in the first six
innings came in the second with two outs. The Tiger's Kevin Cho
hit a line drive that was headed towards Knights' shortstop
Louis Cazares, but hit the umpire standing behind the mound
instead and allowed the runner at third base to score. It was an
unfortunate play for the Knights because it looked as though
Cazares was in position to field the ball for the third out.
The Knights were unable to get
much going on offense throughout the game. Their only threats
came in the sixth and eighth innings. In the sixth, the Knights
had Gilbert Guardado on third base and Cazares on second base
with two out, but they couldn't be brought home. Chuck Matthey
and Kevin Santos led off the eighth inning with back-to-back
singles, but were left stranded.
City hit into three double plays
and had three different runners caught stealing. Orange Coast's
pitching duo of Daniel Warwick and Kyle Krogman held the Knights
scoreless for the first time this season.

in a row.
Herrera, who
improved to 3-0, allowed the only Desert run in the first
inning, but after the Knights tied it in the bottom of the first
on a single by Phil Creecy that scored Gilbert Guardado, Herrera
went on to pitch five scoreless innings.
The Knights went ahead for good
after scoring two runs in the fourth inning. Nick Covyeau and
Michael Sandoval started the inning off with singles. Corey
Vasquez then brought home Covyeau with a single to center field.

eighth innings. Of the six batters he faced, Bileckyj got four
to fly out, one to foul out and one to strike out swinging.
Nick Geraci came in to close the
game in the ninth inning and did not allow the Desert batters to
have a chance at a rally as he quickly struck out the side to
end the game.
